Item No.: 8231 Price : $2,350.00
Item : EARLY AMERICAN MILITIA MUSKET W/ SIMEON NORTH LOCK
Description :
This is an early American Militia Musket that has been built using the lock from a Simeon North Model 1808 Navy Flintlock Pistol. It is stocked in American curly maple. With the smaller pistol lock and 39" barrel it is a slender and graceful arm. Probably built for the New England Militias, it is not typical of the type, having barrel bands instead of a pinned barrel. It is in very good to fine condition. The musket has an overall silvery pewter patina with a few flecks of darker brown. The lock works well, but the full cock notch is a little soft and does not click sharply into position. The bore is very dark and pitted. The maple stock is very good, with just a few small dings from use. There is a large oval thumb piece on the top of the wrist, held with four pins. It is made of iron. I believe it was applied to stabilize some hairline cracks extending back along the grain from the barrel tang. It apparently worked, as the stock has not been broken and the plate has been there a long time! The lock is marked with the Federal Eagle over "U. STATES" just ahead of the hammer. The tail of the lock is marked "S. NORTH" over "BERLIN" over "CON.". This is a very handsome musket and will enhance any collection of early American martial arms. Stock no. 21622
