Description :
Here is a U.S. Model 1812 Flintlock Musket manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1817. This musket has been converted to the percussion system of ignition. Muskets of this type were used in large numbers by both sides during the Civil War. With thousands of flintlock muskets sitting in arsenals, the government began converting them to percussion in 1847. With the outbreak of war, the conversion programs swung into full gear. Both government arsenals and private contractors converted muskets in large numbers. As late as Gettysburg in 1863, over 60% of the arms on the field were large caliber smooth bore muskets. This musket is a crude, "Blacksmith" conversion using a drum, nipple, and hand made hammer and is typical of those conversions done in the South. There is, of course, no way of knowing where the conversion was done. The musket is in good to very good condition. The metal has a dark brown, mostly smooth patina. There is some mottling of this finish on the barrel with areas of pewter color peeking through. There is some significant pitting around the bolster. The lock works well, with a half and full cock position. The nipple used in the conversion is a small rifle size and not the largere size usually associated with muskets. The bore is truly bad, very dark and heavily pitted. The stock is very good, with just a few small dings and scratches from use. There is the remnant of a cartouche on the left flat. The early lock markings remain clear. Stock no. 21612
