Item :	SCARCE, SPANISH MADE M1857 ENFIELD 2-BAND RIFLE

Description :

This is an original, Civil War era Spanish Model 1857 Enfield Rifle manufactured at Aldasoro in 1861. It is believed by researchers that a small number of these guns were imported and used during the War. Originally thought to have been an item of Northern issue, new research indicates that a number also went to the Confederacy. They have long had an association with the "Orphan Brigade" of Kentucky. The Orphan brigade was made of a number of regiments that fought for the Confederacy, even though Kentucky never officially joined the Confederacy. Hence, the name "Orphan". The rifles associated with this brigade are invariably dated 1861, as is this rifle, but have serial numbers below 500. This rifle's serial number is 735, and so, is outside the known range. The rifle is marked Aldasoro and 1861 on the lock plate and stock. The serial number, 735, is stamped on the lock plate, barrel, barrel bands, trigger guard, butt plate, and stock. This rifle is in good to very good condition. The metal has been heavily cleaned, buffed, and polished. It is very bright. The lock plate has been blued with a thin blue that almost resembles a fire blue. The mechanics work very well. The bore is good. There is some light pitting, but there is strong rifling along its length. The stock is in good condition, with the usual scattering of small dings and scratches from use. There is a nice arsenal marking and date on the right side of the butt. The rifle retains its unique rear sight, which was clamped to the barrel and is often missing on these arms. The front sight blade is a modern addition, as is the ramrod, which is an incorrect reproduction. Even given its less than ideal condition, keep in mind that this is one of the scarcest imported arms of the American Civil War. Stock no. 21426
