Item No.: 8167 Price : $975.00
Description :
This is an original, Civil War Smith Artillery Carbine manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. Though called an artillery carbine this is, in fact, an early production gun fitted with sling swivels rather than a saddle ring and bar. Over 30,000 Smith Carbines were produced from 1861-1865 with the vast majority going to the U.S. Government. Cavalry units known to have been issued the Smith were the 3rd West Virginia, the 7th and 11th Illinois, the 1st Connecticut, the 7th and 17th Pennsylvania, the 6th and 9th Ohio, and the 1st Massachusetts. The Smith was a breech loading, percussion arm of .50 caliber. This Smith is a little rough, conditionwise. It is only in fair condition overall. The metal has a dark brown patina, except for the front portion of the barrel. This has been cleaned pretty heavily, leaving an area of significant pitting on a silver background near the muzzle. The receiver has a rough texture on the right side around the percussion cone. The trigger guard, rear swivel, and butt plate have a very rough, brown patina. The forward swivel is missing. The mechanism and lock work pretty well. The nipple is heavily battered. The mechanism has a little slop in it when locked up. The clean out screw on the bolster is missing, probably broken off. The bore is dark and dirty, with some pitting, but the rifling is strongly visible. The wooden stock is also rough. The old varnish has crackled. there are numerous dings and gouges from use and a large chip missing at the top of the stock where it joins the receiver. The fore end is chipped at the top on each side where it meets the receiver. This is a salty old War Horse that has "Seen the Elephant". Stock no. 21413
