KETLAND FLINTLOCK FOWLING PIECE, CA. 1800
Description :
Here is an early, English Flintlock Fowling Piece made by Ketland & Co. of London and dating to about 1800. It is a very handsome arm with a 43" barrel and graceful curved butt stock. It is in very good condition. The barrel has a mostly smooth, dark brown patina. There is some pitting around the area of the pan. The lock has a mottled brown and pewter patina, with some light pitting on the lock plate. The mechanics work well. The bore is dark and pitted. The stock is of nicely figured walnut. There is a very old repair to the forestock about 29" back from the muzzle at which time the forend was replaced (stretched). It appears to be a very old repair, given its fit and finish and the fact that there is a newer repair to the original repair. This repair is on the right side, at the muzzle and extends back about 4 1/2". The ramrod is a replacement and not functional. It ends just inside the entry pipe. This is a great looking fowler that displays very well. Stock no. 21423
