Item No.: 8147 Price : $1,595.00
Item : CIVIL WAR, TYPE II MERRILL BREECH LOADING CARBINE
Description :
Here is an original, Civil War, Type II Merrill Breech Loading Carbine. Manufactured by H. Merrill of Baltimore, MD., The Merrill was a single shot, beech loading, percussion carbine of .54 caliber. Over 14,000 Merrill carbines were produced. They are known to have been issued to a number of Union Cavalry Regiments. These include the 1st, 5th, and 18th New York, the 11th, 17th, and 18th Pennsylvania, the 1st New Jersey, the 7th Indiana, the 1st and 3rd Wisconsin, the 27th Kentucky, and the 1st Delaware Cavalry Regiments. This Merrill is in very good condition. The barrel has no blued finish remaining, having a speckled steel patina, but some Merrills were finished in the bright. The case hardened lock, breech, and breech lever have faded to a steel gray patina. There is some pitting on the breech. The brass stock furniture has a golden bronze patina with darker color in any dings or scratches. The mechanics work well. The bore is dark with some pitting, but there is visible rifling along its length. The stock is darkened with age. It is in good condition with some dings and scratches from use. There are a few heavier scratches on the left butt near the heel of the butt. There is a visible military inspector's cartouche just above the sling ring bar on the left flat of the stock. This is a venerable old warhorse, and a good example of a carbine that saw considerable use during the Civil War. Stock no. 21415
