Item No.: 7979 Price : SOLD
Item : CONFEDERATE IMPORTED P-1856 ENFIELD RIFLE
Description :
Here is an original Civil War Pattern 1856 Enfield 2-Band Rifle manufactured in 1861. This is an iron mounted rifle of .577 caliber. These arms were imported in large numbers by both sides during the Civil War. This rifle is marked just behind the trigger guard with the "S H over G" marking of Sinclair, Hamilton, and Co. This was a company established for the sole purpose of supplying arms and equipment to the Confederacy. This musket is in good to very good condition. The metal has a mottled pewter and dark brown patina. The nose cap and front band are blued and have more finish than the rest of the gun. There is pitting around the bolster. The bore is very dark with significant pitting. There is visible rifling along most of its length. The stock may have been lightly sanded some time in the past. There remains a scattering of light dings and scratches from use. The Sinclair Hamilton markings are very faint, more recognizable by their shape than by actually seeing the letters. There is a crack extending back from the nose cap about 4" on the left side. The bayonet lug has been removed from the barrel. There is no rear sight. This would be a good starter gun for a fledgling Confederate collector. Stock no. 20984
