Item No.: 7965 Price : $3,250.00
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Model 1855 Percussion Pistol-Carbine manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1856. They are fairly scarce with only 4,021 having been manufactured. Intended for Cavalry use, the M1855 Pistol-Carbine was originally issued with a shoulder stock that could be attached or detached from the pistol. This allowed the gun to be used as a pistol while in the saddle or as a carbine while dismounted. It was found to be less than optimum and the Colt revolver quickly rendered it obsolete. This is the pistol only. There is no stock. The pistol is a .58 caliber single shot with a 12" rifled barrel. It is fitted with the Maynard tape primer device, another innovation that proved less than satisfactory in the field. This pistol is in very good to fine condition. The metal has been cleaned to return it to its original "bright" finish. There is some pitting around the bolster, on the door to the Maynard device, and on the ram rod. The brass furniture has a nice golden bronze patina re-developing. The bore is good, with some light pitting, but strong rifling remaining along its length. The stock is in very good condition with a few small dings from years of use. The lock on this gun iss dated 1856 with the barrel tang dated 1855. The maynard primer retains its mechanism. In its long history, Springfield Armory only produced three pistols in any quantity- the Model 1817 Flintlock, the Model 1911 .45 Auto, and the Model 1855 Pistol-Carbine. Stock no. 20982
