Item :	CIVIL WAR, U.S. SPECIAL MODEL 1861 RIFLE MUSKET

This is an original, "Special" Model 1861 Contract Rifle Musket manufactured by Lamson, Goodnow, & Yale of Windsor, Vermont. The Special Model 1861 differed from the regulation U.S. Model 1861 in several ways. The contour of the hammer and lockplate was different, and the barrel bands were of Enfield style with no retention springs. It is believed the design originated at Colt Firearms and was patterned after the Enfield rifle musket. Approximately 180,000 Special Models were manufactured and they served side by side with the standard Model 1861. Lamson, Goodnow, & Yale made about 50,000. The design features were incorporated into the standard U.S. Model 1863 Rifle-Musket. This musket is in very good condition. The metal has been cleaned and remains mostly bright. There is some light pitting around the bolster, on the hammer, trigger guard, and the barrel bands. The butt plate has a speckled brown patina. The bore is near mint, very fine, with bright shiny rifling. The mechanics are excellent. The stock is good, but was sanded at some time in the past. The edges are rounded and there is some wood loss near the nose cap on the right side. The cartouches are no longer visible. The lock is dated 1864 and marked "U.S." over "L.G.-& Y." over "WINDSOR-Vt". The barrel is dated 1863. With its great bore and mechanics, this would be a perfect skirmish shooter's gun.
