U.S. SPANISH AMERICAN WAR MODEL 1878 "MERRIAM" PACK
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Model 1878 "Merriam" pack. This was the standard pack from the late Indian Wars into the Spanish American War. It was made of canvas with an internal metal frame. Access was from 4 flaps on the back of the pack. Originally, the pack had two long hickory sticks and leather straps for fastening them to the pack. These were intended to move the weight of the pack from the shoulders to the hips. This pack was despised by the troops, who called it "The Murdering Knapsack". The hickory sticks and leather pockets were removable and often discarded. These were primarily issued to New York State Troops, and this one is marked on the interior: "INSPr. GENLs. DEPt." over "S.N.Y." over INSPd. 1894". This pack is in very good condition. The body of the pack is complete with all straps, but, as stated, the hickory sticks and their leather cups are not with the pack. The canvas and stitching are good. but the canvas has some soiling from years of storage. The leather is supple, but dry, with the blacked finish deteriorating and coming off as dust, All in all, this is a good example of an unusual early pack. Stock no. 20762
