Description :
|
This is an original, Harper's Ferry marked, 1861 dated, U.S, model 1855 Rifle. It is in very fine condition. The condition and lack of federal inspector's cartouches on the stock probably indicate that this is one of the first rifles assembled in Richmond, Virginia using the parts captured at Harper's Ferry by Stonewall Jackson in April of 1861. The earliest rifles made for Confederate use were built from captured parts. Later arms were actually produced using the captured machinery sent to Richmond by Jackson. Two band rifles are considerably more scarce than the three band rifle muskets. This musket is in very fine condition. The rifle is iron mounted, correct for 1861. The metal retains most of its factory bright finish. There are some very light surface pits on the barrel, almost like etching. The iron buttplate has a liberal speckling of dark brown patina. The bore is very fine as well. There is some very light pitting, but strong rifling along its entire length. The mechanics are excellent. The stock is very fine with just a few tiny dings from storage. There are some initials lightly scratched into the left flat of the stock. The stock is not quite as nicely finished as one finished at the arsenal, which is another indicator of Confederate assembly. This is a superb example of the Model 1855 Rifle. Stock no. 20710
