ORIGINAL, CIVIL WAR, U.S. GWYNN & CAMPBELL CAVALRY CARBINE
Description :
This is an original, U.S. Gwynn & Campbell .52 caliber cavalry carbine. The Gwynn & Campbell was produced in Hamilton, OH in 1863 and 1864. It is a breech loading, percussion carbine with a distinctive grape vine shaped lever. This is the early Type 1, with a total production of about 4,200. A number of Union cavalry regiments are known to have carried the Gwynn & Campbell, including regiments from Tennessee, Ohio, Missouri, Wisconsin, Iowa, Arkansas, Illinois, Kansas, and Kentucky. Obviously, these carbines saw much use during the war. This carbine is in as found, "attic" condition. It has a dark brown patina overall with some rust spotting and surface pitting. The bore is abysmal, dark, crusty, and pitted. The stock is dark with a few small dings from use. The mechanics work well and the breech locks up tightly. This is a great old war horse that "seen the elephant" in its day.
