VERY FINE, U.S. MODEL 1861 SPRINGFIELD RIFLE MUSKET, 1862 DATED

This is a U.S. Model 1861 Rifle Musket manufactured by Springfield Armory in 1862. The M1861 is a .58 caliber percussion musket, and was the "standard" issue musket of the Union Army. This musket is in very fine condition. They were finished "in the bright" and this one retains more than 95% of its bright finish. There is a very, very light sprinkling of patina on the barrel bands, hammer, and butt plate. The musket has a mint bore and excellent mechanics. The stock is very fine with two crisp inspector's cartouches on the left panel. More inspector's initials are stamped just behind the trigger guard strap. There is a rough area on the left side of the comb of the stock, that looks like it may have been a flaw in the stock blank during manufacture. This is a superb example of the Model 1861 Rifle Musket. They are becoming increasingly hard to find in the higher condition grades.
