Here is an original, Civil War, Merrill Cavalry Carbine of .54 caliber. This is a 1st Type Merrill with brass furniture and a brass patchbox. Approximately 15,000 Merrill carbines were produced and the Government purchased a substantial number of them. A number of Union Cavalry regiments are known to have been issued Merrill carbines. These include the 1st, 5th, and 18th New York, the 11th, 17th, and 18th Pennsylvania, the 1st New Jersey, the 7th Indiana, the 1st and 3rd Wisconsin, the 27th Kentucky, and the 1st Delaware. This Merrill is in good condition, showing some hard use in the saddle. There is no original finish remaining. The steel has a mottled dark brown patina and the brass a nice dark bronze color. The mechanics work very well. The bore has some significant pitting, but visible rifling throughout. The stock bore the brunt of this carbine's hard service. There are significant dings, scratches, and gouges overall. The Merrill was a carbine that saw a lot of use during the Civil War and this is one that definitely "seen the Elephant".
