Description :
This is an original, Civil War, U.S. Model 1860 Spencer Cavalry Carbine. This carbine fired the 56-56 Spencer cartridge, which was in actuality, a .52 caliber cartridge. The 56-56 designation referred to measurements of the cartridge case. Approximately 50,000 Spencer carbines were produced from 1863 to 1865. The Spencer was a 7 shot breech loading repeater fed from a tubular magazine in the butt stock. By the end of the Civil War, the Spencer had established itself as the preeminent Cavalry Carbine design and was used throughout the Indian Wars as well. After an early firing demonstration, the Spencer earned the personal endorsement of President Abraham Lincoln. This carbine is in very good to fine condition. The gun has an overall smooth brown patina, with traces of the original finish visible. The receiver has a more pewter gray patina. The bore is very good. There is some very light pitting, but strong rifling is present along the barrels length. The carbine's mechanics are excellent, but the tubular magazine is missing its plunger and spring. The wood is very good, with some small dings and scratches from use. There is a circular cut or stamp on the right side of the butt. There is a very faint square scratched into the wood on the right butt with a "52" over "56" inside. This is a nice example of the legendary Spencer, the carbine you could load in the morning and shoot all day!
