Here is an original U.S. M-1913 Entrenching Shovel set. The set consists of the shovel blade, a cast iron handle that can be used as a picket pin, or farrier's tool, and the leather cover for the handle. The shovel is attached to the handle with a cotter pin attached to a chain. The handle has a hammer end with claw for pulling nails. The iron parts of the set are painted black. The shovel blade may have been repainted. The set retains about 95% of its black paint. The leather sheath for the handle is complete with straps and ring for attaching to the saddle. The leather is smooth and undamaged, but also dry and stiff. The handle will not go all the way into the scabbard, until the leather is softened.
