Description :
|
|
.58 Caliber Breechloading US Martial Long Gun. Side lever Hall North in very good condition. "1852" Dated on top of breech. Metal is a smooth black/gray patina overall. Good bore, fine mechanics. Complete with sling ring and bar and original ram rod. Very good oil finished stock with clear cartouche on either flat. 5,000 of these guns were languishing in a New York Armory in their original .52 smoothbore state when Gen. Charles Fremont, J.P. Morgan and others purchased them to outfit Fremont's Western Cavalry outfits for $3.50 each, had them rifled for .25 cents each and sold them to the Government for $22.00 each. When word of this got around it was a factor in the removal of Fremont from his command. These hung on in the Western Cavalry units until almost the end of the War! Nice gun with an interesting Historical Sidebar.
