This is an original, Civil War Sharps New Model 1863 Cavalry Carbine made in 1863. It is a .52 caliber breech loading single shot carbine firing a nitrated paper cartridge. Approximately 40,000 New Model 1863 carbines were produced. The Sharps was the most widely issued Cavalry Carbine of the war. This one is in fine condition. It retains about 80% of the factory blued finish on the barrel The cased color on the frame has darkened to a smooth brown. The butt plate has a smooth brown patina, also. This carbine has excellent mechanics and a very fine bore. The stock is in fine condition with just a few tiny dings from use. There are some light colored spots on the right side of the butt at the heel. It looks like something spattered on the wood. They may be mildew spots. This is a great, original Civil War Sharps.
