Item :	VERY RARE, UNION ARMS U.S. MODEL 1861 RIFLE-MUSKET, .58 CAL.

Description :

This is an original, Civil War, U.S. Model 1861 Rifle-Musket of .58 caliber. The Model 1861 eliminated the Maynard tape primer of the earlier Model 1855 Rifle musket and was the standard U.S. Musket of the Civil War. Though Springfield production ended in 1862, production by contractors continued right through the end of the war. It served from the opening shots to the surrender at Appomattox. This rifle musket was produced by the Union Arms Company of New York, New York in 1863. Although awarded a contract to produce 65,000 muskets, Union Arms was only able to produce about 300, making it the rarest of all the Model 1861 rifle-muskets. This one is in fine condition. It remains Armory Bright with a few fine speckles of patina. These specks are heaviest around the nipple and bolster. The mechanics are excellent. The bore is excellent as well, bright and shiny. The stock is in fine condition with a few small dings and scratches from use. There are two strong inspector's cartouches on the left flat of the stock. This is a rare M1861 Rifle-Musket in very nice condition. Stock no. 32702
