Item :	VERY FINE COLT MODEL 1861 "SPECIAL" RIFLE MUSKET, .58 CALIBER

Description :

This is a .58 Caliber percussion US Model 1861 Rifle Musket by Colt Firearms produced in 1863 and so marked on the lock and barrel flat. Colt was the lead design on the M1861 Special Model Rifle Muskets. These Enfield Like pieces were built on Robbins and Lawrence Enfield Machinery and incorporated many of the better features of these British arms. Differences from the standard Model 1861 rifle musket included a wedge shaped, stronger hammer, straight ramrods with stock spoon, and screw bands with no band springs. The clean out screw on the bolster was eliminated. These changes led directly to the improvements incorporated in the M1863 Springfield Rifle Muskets. This musket is in very fine to excellent condition. It remains nearly 100% armory bright with just a few tiny brown specks. The last 4-inches of the ramrod did have some rusting which has been cleaned leaving some brown patina behind. The mechanics are excellent. The bore is excellent, also. It is bright and shiny, looking close to new. The stock is very fine with a few small dings and scratches from storage. There are two crisp inspector's cartouches on the left flat of the stock. The gun has a number of sub-inspector initials. Condition wise, this is about as nice an original Civil War musket as can be found. Stock no. 32873
