This is an original, Civil War, Remington Model 1863 Percussion Contract Rifle manufactured in 1863. Known as the "Zouave", the Model 1863 Remington is considered to be one of the best made and designed military arms of the Civil War. Approximately 12,501 were produced from 1862-1865, with all delivered in 1865. The Zouave was a handsome weapon, with a .58 caliber, 33" blued barrel and brass stock furniture with a patchbox. This rifle is in fine condition. About 80% of the blued finish remains on the barrel, which is beginning to develop a plum brown color. The hemmer and lock have a steel gray/brown patina. The brass mountings have a nice golden brass patina. The rifle has excellent mechanics and an excellent bore. The walnut stock is very fine with a visible inspector's cartouche and just a few very tiny dings from use or storage. There is a small repair on the right side of the stock at the barrel channel. This rifle is in great condition and would make an excellent shooter. Stock no. 32400
