This is an original, Springfield Model 1863 Rifle Musket that has been professionally rebuilt as a half-stock hunting or Plains rifle. The barrel has been shortened, re-rifled, and fitted with a patent breech with a new bolster. The bolster has a clean out screw. The stock retains the rear barrel band which is now held in place with a screw. In addition, there is a fine, poured pewter nose cap. The barrel has an iron under rib with two ramrod pipes. The wrist has been fitted with an iron pistol grip of the type used on Trapdoor Officer's Rifles and long-range models. Everything appears to have been done in the 1870's except for the front sight ramp which looks much later to me. This rifle is in fine condition. The barrel has been blued and retains about 60% of that finish with overall even wear. The hammer retains most of its cased color. The lock plate has some brown speckling developing. The barrel band is brown. The mechanics are excellent. The bore is very fine with a few small specks. It has been rifled with 8 grooves. I don't know if a new barrel was fitted with the patent breech, or not. The barrel with breech is 32" long and remains about .58 caliber. The varnished stock is in fine condition with a few small dings from use. This is an intriguing rifle. No amateur job, this was done by someone who knew what they were doing. The fit and finish is very high quality. This should be an excellent shooter. Stock no. 32819
