Description :

This is an original, U.S. Model 1888 Trapdoor Rifle manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1890. It is chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. The Model 1888 was the last of the Trapdoor rifles. It also marked the end of the single shot, big bore, black powder arm era in the U.S. Military. The M1888 differed from the earlier trapdoor variations by being fitted with an extendable ramrod type bayonet. Approximately 65,000 were produced between 1889 and 1893. This rifle is in fine condition with 85-90% of its factory blued finish remaining. There is light overall finish wear consistent with handling. There are a few speckles on the barrel. The barrel bands have a little heavier finish wear. There is some wear on the heel and toe of the butt plate. The lock has a mottled finish. The cased color of the breech block is turning brown. The color is strong on the underside of the breech. The rifle has excellent mechanics. The bore is in very good condition. It is shiny, but there are what looks like tool marks visible in places. The stock is very good with a crisp inspector's cartouche dated "1890". The stock has a scattering of small dings and scratches from use and one large scratch on the left side of the butt. I think this should be a decent shooter and a good-looking rifle to boot. Stock no. 32824
