Item :	RARE SPRINGFIELD ARMORY U.S. MODEL 1855 PISTOL-CARBINE, .58 CALIBER, W/ STOCK

This is an original, U.S. Model 1855 Pistol-Carbine manufactured at Springfield Armory in 1856. Springfield only produced 4,021 of these from 1855 to 1857. It is a large, single-shot, percussion pistol with a detachable shoulder stock. It has a 12-inch, round barrel that is rifled. It is .58 caliber and intended for use with the new "Minie" ball. It is fitted with the Maynard Tape Primer Device. This allowed, in theory, a new cap to be advanced to the percussion cone each time the pistol was cocked, eliminating the need to manually cap the weapon for each shot. In practice it was finicky and did not work well. These Pistol-Carbines are known to have been issued to the 1st and 2nd U.S. Cavalry in the West. They were intended to be used as a pistol when mounted and as a carbine when fighting dismounted. This gun is in antique good to very good condition. It retains its original stock. The barrel and lock have a steel gray patina heavily speckled with dark brown/black. There is some pitting on around the bolster. There is heavier pitting on the ramrod and swivel with some rough texture on the ramrod. The brass mountings have a nice yellow brass patina. The mountings on the pistol appear to have been varnished. The brass on the stock does not have this finish. The lock works correctly and the Maynard device still functions properly. The nipple appears to be a later replacement and is not fully seated. The bore is fair. The rifling is strongly visible, but there is some significant pitting up near the muzzle. The wood is in good condition with a scattering of small dings, gouges, and scratches from use. These pistols are quite rare and the stocks are even rarer. Stock no. 32760
