Here is a Colt Model 1851 Revolver that has been factory converted to fire the .38 caliber centerfire cartridge. These were done in the mid-1870's. The conversion included a loading gate and bored-through, 6-shot cylinder. The loading lever was removed and replaced with an ejector rod and housing. The barrel lug was plugged. The frame has 1871 and 1872 patent dates. Colt converted about 3,800 of these numbered from 1 to 3,800. These were often hard used and that is the case here. This revolver is in fair condition. It had rusted pretty heavily and was pitted. It was cleaned pretty hard and has since developed a gray/brown patina. The edges of the barrel flats are a little rounded up near the muzzle. There are still significant pits on the cylinder. The revolver is serial number 2517, but the brass trigger guard and back strap do not match. They are, however, in the correct range. The gun's mechanism works, but the cylinder does not rotate quite enough when you cock it. The ejector works well. The barrel appears to have been stretched with last 3-inches added back on. The bore of this portion is smooth and rusted. The rifled portion is dark. I believe that the original owner had the barrel shortened and someone restored it to its original length. The grips are well worn with a few small dings from use. There is a gap where the rear strap meets the trigger guard. This is a little rough but a good-looking Old West Cowboy Gun. Stock no. 32763
