Here is an original, Model 1870 Trapdoor Rifle made at Springfield Armory between 1870 and 1873. It is chambered for the .50-70 cartridge. The Model 1870 is almost identical to the 2nd Model Allin conversion trapdoors but has a slightly shorter receiver. Also, the arch on the underside of the breech block is slightly longer. These were built using existing Civil War musket locks. This one is dated 1863. This was the last variant of the Trapdoor before the adoption of the .45-70 cartridge. Only about 11,000 were made. This rifle is in very good condition. It has been lightly cleaned to restore the armory bright finish. There is a sprinkling of fine specks of brown patina in some places. there is some fine pitting on the barrel bands and the bow of the trigger guard. The receiver has a smooth dark brown patina. The breech block retains some cased color. The lock plate and hammer have been polished and have a smooth brown and steel patina. The rifle has excellent mechanics. The bore is fair to good with some old pitting that has been cleaned and polished. The rifling is strongly visible along the bore's length. the stock is in good condition with a scattering of small dings and scratches from use. Included is a well made replica sling in very fine condition. This is one of the harder-to-find variants of the Trapdoor but a must if you want a complete collection. Stock no. 32659
