Description :
|
|
This is an original, U.S. Model 1879 Trapdoor Rifle manufactured at Springfield Armory. It is chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. The M1879 had a strengthened receiver that was a bit thicker and wider than the one on the Model 1873. About 160,000 were produced between 1879 and 1885. This rifle is in very good to fine condition. About 80% of its factory blued finish remains. There is some wear on the trigger guard and butt plate. There is very light overall wear on the barrel. The lock plate and hammer have developed a smooth dark brown patina. The cased color on the breech block has darkened to a dark blue color. The rifle has excellent mechanics. The bore is very fine to excellent. It is bright and shiny with strong rifling. The stock is very good with a scattering of small dings, scratches, and gouges from use. the inspector's cartouche is visible on the left flat of the stock. It is dated 1886, so may be a period replacement. This rifle should be a good shooter. Stock no. 32425
