This is an original, U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle manufactured in 1899 and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. Approximately 330,000 were made between 1898 and 1903. The M1898 Krag had the shortest service life of any U.S. arm, replaced by the M1903 Rifle just 5 years after production began. The Krag was the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. This rifle is in excellent condition. It retains more than 98% of its factory finish with just a very tiny blemish or two. The bolt remains bright. The bore and mechanics are excellent. The stock is excellent, as well, with a sharp inspector's cartouche and "P" firing proof. This is one of the finest Krag rifles I have ever had. You will be hard pressed to find a better one!
