|
This is a Contemporary Iron Mounted Southern Flintlock Rifle built by renowned gunmaker Clay Smith. Clay Smith started as an interpreter in the Williamsburg, Virginia Gunshop in 1988. He then moved to Anderson Forge at Williamsburg where he spent 2 1/2 years learning blacksmithing. He became an apprentice at the Williamsburg Gunshop in 1991 and received his Journeyman's papers in 1995. Smith left Williamsburg in 2009 and began building guns full time at home. His work is well known in muzzleloading circles. He is a master horner and bagmaker, as well. This rifle is built in the style of Southern Mountain rifles. It is iron mounted with an iron banana shaped patchbox.
This is a small bore gun, often called a "Squirrel Gun". It is .32 caliber. The un-tapered octagonal barrel is 42" long, measuring 3/4" across the flats. The rifle is in excellent condition with a smooth brown finish. The finish is a little mottled on the patchbox. The barrel is marked "C. Smith" in script. The lock is marked "Ashmore Warranted". The barrel is marked "XCV" which I assume indicates that this is the 95Th gun Mr. Smith built. I could also be completely wrong! The mechanics are excellent with the lock throwing a good shower of sparks. The bore is excellent, also. The maple stock is in excellent condition. The tiger stripe maple has good figure. There is a German Silver "Man in the Moon" inlay on the cheekpiece. This is a beautiful early rifle by a master maker. Stock no. 32468
