Item :	U.S. MODEL 1841 MISSISSIPPI RIFLE BY REMINGTON

This is an original U.S. Model 1841 Rifle produced by E. Remington of Herkimer, New York in 1852. The firm of Remington produced 10,000 of these rifles from 1850 to 1854. Known as the "Mississippi" rifle by virtue of its service with Jefferson Davis's Mississippi Regiment in the Mexican American War, the Model 1841 soldiered on into the Civil War. It was used by both sides. In addition, settlers bound west on the Oregon Trail could purchase one of these rifles from the government. They are referred to as jaegers or yaugers in contemporary accounts. Originally, the M1841 fired a patched .54 round ball. The Mississippi Rifle is a great historic arm, with service in two wars and America's Westward expansion. About 80% of Remington's production was shipped to Southern states prior to the Civil War and was in their armories when hostilities began. This rifle is in very good condition. At some point, the barrel has been smooth-bored to about .58 caliber for use as a shotgun. A smooth bore was more utilitarian on the frontier than a rifle to many folks. You could shot pellets, yet still use a patched ball accurately to 50-60 yards. This rifle has a mostly smooth, mottled brown and steel gray patina. There is more brown patina than steel gray. There is some pitting around the bolster from cap splash. The brass mountings have a nice yellow brass patina. The mechanics are excellent. The bore has some pitting but is mostly smooth. The stock is in very good condition with a scattering of small dings and scratches from use. There is a little wood loss behind the hammer. An inspector's cartouche is faintly visible on the left flat of the stock. The Mississippi is a iconic arm with a lot of history. Stock no. 32508
