Item No.: 10751 Price : $3,695.00
Item : MODEL 1841 MISSISSIPPI RIFLE, 46TH MASSACHUSETTS REGIMENT MARKED
Description :
This is an original U.S. Model 1841 Rifle produced by Robbins and Lawrence of Windsor, Vermont in 1849. The firm of Robbins and Lawrence produced 15,000 of these rifles from 1848 to 1853. Known as the "Mississippi" rifle by virtue of its service with Jefferson Davis's Mississippi Regiment in the Mexican American War, the Model 1841 soldiered on into the Civil War. It was used by both sides. In addition, settlers bound west on the Oregon Trail could purchase one of these rifles from the government. They are referred to as jaegers or yaugers in contemporary accounts. Originally, the M1841 fired a patched .54 round ball. The Mississippi Rifle is a great historic arm, with service in two wars and America's Westward expansion. This Mississippi is unit marked. The tang of the butt plate is stamped with the markings of Company H of the 46th Massachusetts Regiment. They are known to have received the Mississippi Rifle and are one of the few units to regimentally mark their arms. This rifle is in very good condition. The barrel has an overall steel gray patina with a heavy coating of dark brown speckles. These speckles have lightly etched the steel leaving shallow pits behind. The lock has the same patina. The brass mountings have a nice golden brass patina. The mechanics are excellent. The bore is very good with strong rifling along the bore's length. There are a few dark speckles, but it is mostly shiny. the stock is very good with two visible inspector's cartouches. One is very faint. There are some old polished chips along the barrel channel. The entire stock looks like it has been hand rubbed with oil. There are a couple of hairline check cracks running forward from the butt plate on either side. They are about two inches long running with the grain. This is a Civil War arm that can actually be traced to the unit that carried it. Stock no. 32460
