Item :	S. NORRIS & W.T. CLEMENT MASSACHUSETTS CONTRACT RIFLE MUSKET, .58 CALIBER

Description :

This is a Civil War Rifle musket made by Samuel Norris & William T. Clement of Springfield, Massachusetts in 1863. It is .58 caliber. These muskets were made under a direct contract for the state of Massachusetts in 1863 and 1864. Total production was 11,000 muskets with all going to Massachusetts. The locks on these muskets were stamped "S.N. & W.T.C. FOR MASSACHUSETTS". These muskets most closely resemble the U.S. Model 1861 Special musket or the Type I Model 1863 musket. This musket is in very good to fine condition with an overall armory bright finish that has developed a steel gray patina. There is some brown mottling on the barrel, particularly around the bolster and rear sight. The rear barrel band has a light brown patina. The lock is steel gray with traces of cased color visible on the hammer. The mechanics are excellent. The bore is in very fine condition. There are a few small spots that may be pits, but for the most part it is shiny with strong rifling. The stock is very good to fine with a scattering of small dings and scratches from use. Someone used a small punch to stamp what looks like the Roman numeral "XXVII" in dots along the right side of the trigger guard. Included is a replica sling in excellent condition.
