Description :

|
This is an original, Sharps-Borchardt Model 1878 Military Rifle made by the Sharps Rifle Company of Bridgeport, Connecticut and chambered for the .45-70 Government cartridge. It is a hammerless, falling block, single-shot rifle with a sleek, smooth-sided frame. Designed by Hugo Borchardt, it was also the last of the Sharps rifles. Hugo Borchardt would go on to design semi-automatic pistols including the basic design of the Luger. This is a military rifle. It has a full-length forend fastened by two barrel bands. About 6,900 of these were produced with many purchased by foreign countries. This rifle is in very fine condition with about 95% of its factory blued finish remaining. There is some finish wear on the steel checkered butt plate. A little brown patina has developed on the barrel bands. The lever and breech block retain about 60% of their cased color with some wear and brown patina on the lever. There is also some brown mottling on the cleaning rod. The bore and mechanics are excellent. The stock is fine with a few small dings and scratches from use. The initials "J N" are scratched on the left side of the butt. There is a small gouge on the right side of the forearm about three inches ahead of the receiver. Included is an original military sling stamped "STOLLA" over "WIEN" (Stolla of Vienna, Austria). It is in excellent condition, but much later than the rifle. This is a very nice example of the Sharps-Borchardt military rifle. Stock no. 32459
