Item :	VERY RARE, COLT MODEL 1868 RUSSIAN BERDAN I RIFLE, .42 BERDAN

This is an original, Colt Model 1868 Berdan I Rifle chambered for the .42 Berdan Centerfire cartridge. This rifle was designed by Hiram Berdan, known for his famed Civil War "Sharpshooters" Regiment. It is a single-shot, breechloading rifle that uses an early "Trapdoor" system. Approximately 30,000 were made under a Russian contract between 1868 and 1870. This was the first metallic cartridge firearm that Colt produced. Nearly all rifles produced went to Russia, making them quite rare on the collector's market. This rifle is in fine condition with about 85% of its factory finish remaining. There is some finish wear on the barrel bands and the nose cap. Most of the finish has worn off of the butt plate. There are some tiny dings on the edges of the trigger guard. The breech area retains nearly all of its cased color. The bore and mechanics are excellent. The stock is fine with a scattering of small dings and scratches from use. There are some cut marks on the left side of the stock along the barrel channel on either side of the front band. The barrel has the Colt markings, but in Russian Cyrillic letters. This is a rare rifle that will be a great addition to any Colt collection. Stock no. 32461
