Description :

This is an original, Civil War, U.S. Model 1861 Springfield Rifle-Musket of .58 caliber. The Model 1861 eliminated the Maynard tape primer of the earlier Model 1855 Rifle musket and was the standard U.S. Musket of the Civil War. Though Springfield production ended in 1862, production by contractors continued right through the end of the war. It served from the opening shots to the surrender at Appomattox. This rifle-musket was produced at Springfield Armory in 1861. It is in excellent condition, one of the finest I have ever seen. It remains armory bright. There is a little bit of surface rust on the butt plate at the heel and toe. There is some very, very light surface rust beginning to form on the barrel bands. The mechanics are excellent. The bore is very fine to excellent, shiny with strong rifling. The stock is very fine to excellent with a crisp inspector's cartouche. There is a blemish and a short check crack at the back of the lock plate. There are a couple of tiny dings elsewhere from storage. There is some brown patina on the first four inches of the ramrod. If you want one outstanding Civil War musket, this is about as good as they get. Stock No. 32451
