ENGLISH PATTERN 1858 PERCUSSION CARBINE, .577 CALIBER

Description :

|
This is an original English Pattern 1858 Carbine made by Barnett of London. It is a short percussion carbine with a 23-inch barrel. Carbines of this type were intended for mounted troops, mostly cavalry and artillery. A number of these were imported by the Confederacy during the Civil War. I am not certain if this one dates to the civil War era or shortly thereafter. It is in fair condition with several replaced parts. The barrel bands are replaced with the front band not fitting properly. The ramrod is probably a replacement. The hammer shows more pitting and dark patina than the lock plate. The entire gun has a dark brown patina on the iron parts, except for the rear band which is blued and some blue on the breech area of the barrel and bolster. The brass appears to have been polished and given a coat of shellac or varnish which is starting to flake off. The gun works well mechanically. The bore is surprisingly good with a few small pits, but shiny rifling along its length. The stock is fair with some dings and gouges from use. There is a hairline crack running back from the barrel tang along the wrist. There are some chips around the barrel tang. This is a little rough, but a representative example of a Pattern 1858 carbine. Stock no. 32421
