Here is an original Civil War Ball Cavalry Carbine made by Lamson & Company of Windsor Vermont. It is chambered for the .52-56 Spencer cartridge. The Ball was a lever-action, repeating carbine fed from a tubular magazine in the forearm. The U.S. Government ordered a thousand of these in 1864. The contract was not finished until 1865 after the cessation of hostilities. Collectors do consider the Ball to be a Civil War era gun. Total production of this carbine was only 1002 guns, making them fairly rare. This one is in fine condition. The barrel has about 90% of its original factory blued finish remaining. There is a rusted patch behind the nose band that has left a rough brown patina. the frame retains about 80% of its cased color, but there are spots of light brown developing and some finish wear on the lock plate. The barrel bands and butt plate also retain most of their cased color. The mechanics are excellent. The bore is in good condition. There is some pitting that has been polished. The rifling is strongly visible along the bore's length. The stock is in very fine condition with a few tiny dings and scratches from use or storage. There is a crisp inspector's cartouche on the left wrist just behind the frame. This is a nice example of a rare Civil War arm. Stock no. 32263
