Description :

This is an original, Civil War, Gwynn & Campbell Type 2 Cavalry Carbine manufactured by Gwynn & Campbell of Hamilton, Ohio. It is a .52 caliber, percussion breechloader with a 20" barrel. Also known as the "Union Carbine" or "Grapevine Carbine", it was produced under no fewer than 13 government contracts with a total of 8,202 manufactured. Union Cavalry outfits known to have been issued the Gwynn & Campbell include the 7th Tennessee, 5th & 8th Ohio, 4th & 8th Missouri, 3rd Wisconsin, 2nd & 3rd Iowa, 2nd & 3rd Arkansas, 5th, 6th, and 16th Illinois, 2nd, 6th, and 14th Kansas, and 10th, 12th, and 14th Kentucky. This carbine is in very good to fine condition with an overall, streaky, light brown patina. Some cased color remains on the lock and frame, maybe 30%. The lever is dark brown. The gun has excellent mechanics. There appears to be a hairline crack in the lower tang/trigger plate. It runs forward from the rear end of the plate to the lever retaining catch. It may be a casting flaw. The bore is excellent, shiny and bright with strong rifling. The stock is very good to fine with a scattering of small dings and scratches from use. There is a crisp inspector's cartouche on the left wrist of the stock. This is a nice example of a type of carbine that saw extensive use in the Civil War. Stock no. 32267
