Description :

Here is a Palmer Bolt Action Carbine manufactured by E.G. Lamson & Co. in 1865. It is chambered for a .50 caliber rimfire cartridge. The Palmer has the distinction of being the first bolt action metallic cartridge firearm adopted by the US Military. Only about 1,000 of these were made for a late-war US Government contract. They were not delivered until June of 1865 after the war's end. This carbine is in very fine to excellent condition. The barrel retains about 95% of its factory blued finish with small areas just beginning to turn brown and a few small rust spots and dings. There is finish wear on the trigger guard with about half having turned brown. The lock and butt plate retain nearly all of their cased colors. The barrel band has faded to gray. The carbine has excellent mechanics and a very fine bore. There are a few small brown spots in the bore, but it is mostly shiny with strong rifling. The stock is very fine with a few small dings and scuffes from use or storage. There is a crisp inspector's cartouche on the left flet of the stock. This is a very nice example of a Palmer Carbine.
