This is an original, Russian SVT-40 Semi-Automatic Rifle manufactured in 1941 and chambered for the 7.62x54R cartridge. Designed by Fedor Tokarev, the SVT-40 was an improved and simplified version of the earlier SVT-38. The SVT-40 was a gas-operated design with a short stroke piston feeding from a detachable 10 round box magazine. It was hoped the rifle would become the standard issue battle rifle of the Soviet Union, but it was a complex design, hard for troops with minimal training to maintain in the field, and prone to failure. Simpler, more robust designs, like the M1891/30 Mosin-Nagant Rifle and the PPSH-41 Submachine gun, moved to the forefront of production and fewer SVT-40's were produced each year. The rifles that were made were mostly issued to non-coms and specialized troops. Production ended in early 1945 with about 1.6 million produced. This rifle is in good condition with some significant visible surface rusting. Most of the rust is on the bolt, receiver, butt plate, and magazine. It has left brown patina on the bolt and receiver with some pitting on the bolt handle. The exposed part of the magazine has light pitting with a brown patina. The butt plate has a roughly textured dark brown patina. There is some rust speckling on the exposed metal handguard and barrel, but most of the blued finish remains here. The rifle works well mechanically with a mismatched bolt. The bore is actually in good condition. The grooves are a little dark, but the rifling is strong along the barrel's length. The stock is very good with some old dings and scratches from use. There is a crisp star stamped on the right side of the butt. The serial number on the left side does not match the receiver number.
