Item No.: 10716 Price : $5,950.00
Item : RARE REMINGTON JENKS MULE EAR NAVY CARBINE W/TAPE PRIMER, .54 CAL.
Description :
This is an original, Jenks Navy Carbine made by E. Remington & Son of Herkimer, New York in 1847. This carbine differs from the standard Jenks. It has a Maynard Tape Primer device fitted on the right side of the gun. When Ames was awarded a contract to build the standard Jenks, they also got a contract to produce 1,000 improved carbines with the Maynard tape Primer. They sold the contract to E. Remington along with the original Jenks machinery. Remington then produced about 1,000 of these carbines. This is a .54 caliber, percussion carbine with a side-hammer and a 24-1/4" round barrel. The side hammer gives this carbine the nickname "Mule Ear" carbine. The Jenks has the distinction of being the only "Mule Ear" type firearm ever adopted by the U.S. Military. This carbine is in very fine to excellent condition. The barrel retains about 98% of its original factory plum brown finish. There are just a few tiny scratches and dings in this very fragile finish. The lock and hammer have about 60% of their cased color remaining with some brown speckling on the tail of the lock plate and on the tape primer cover. The lever, originally blued, has some brown patina spotting with about 50% of the blue remaining. The brass stock furniture has a nice golden brass patina. The bore and mechanics on this carbine are excellent. The bore is shiny with sharp rifling. the stock is in fine condition with a few small dings and scratches from use or storage. There is a crisp "R P" inspector's cartouche on the left side of the wrist. I believe that these improved Remington Jenks carbines were built with oval loading apertures for paper cartridge use but still had smooth-bore barrels. The Navy had the guns rifled at the start of the Civil War. This is a rare gun in outstanding condition. Stock no. 32258
