This is an original, Civil War Sharps & Hankins Model 1862 Carbine manufactured in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and chambered for the .52 Rimfire cartridge. The Sharps & Hankins uses a lever to cause the barrel assembly to slide forward for loading a cartridge. Approximately 8,000 were built between 1862 and 1865. This is a Navy type carbine. The Navy purchased 6,686 of these carbines. The Navy version has a sewn leather cover over the 24" barrel to protect the barrel from rusting while serving on naval vessels. In actuality, leather absorbs moisture and probably contributed to, rather than protecting against, rust. These carbines saw extensive service on Naval vessels and the leather cover is frequently damaged or missing. This carbine is in very good to fine condition with a complete leather cover. There is little original finish remaining with traces of cased color on the frame and the remainder having a mottled brown and steel gray patina. The lever, rear sight, and muzzle collar are dark brown. The brass butt plate has a nice yellow brass patina. The leather barrel cover is in fine condition with a bit of wear where the lever rubs as the action is opened. There is some overall fine cracking of the leather surface. The stitching is tight along the cover's length. The leather has shrunken a bit and pulled away from the two rear screws that held it in place. The mechanics are excellent. The bore is very good. There are some fine pits in spots, but it is mostly shiny with strong rifling along its length. The stock is very fine with just a tiny ding or two from use. These have gotten quite scarce with the leather cover intact. Stock no. 92254
