Here is an original, Civil War, Starr Percussion Cavalry Carbine manufactured by the Starr Arms Company of Yonkers, New York. Similar to the Sharps Carbine in appearance and function, the Starr was a .54 caliber, single shot breech loader. 20,601 were produced between 1862 and 1865. In government tests, the Starr was actually rated as better than the Sharps. Mostly issued in the western theatre, the Starr is known to have been used by the 1st Arkansas, 5th Kansas, 11th Missouri, and the 24th New York. The 1st Arkansas is the only unit known to have officially marked their carbines. They are quite scarce and desirable. This is one of those carbines. It is hand stamped with single letter dies on the top of the frame over the breech with the three line marking "1"/"ARK"/"I". This indicates "I" Company of the 1st Arkansas. This carbine is in very fine condition. About 50% of the factory blued finish remains on the barrel with the remainder having turned a smooth brown. The lever has about 40% of its blue remaining. The lock and frame have about 80% of their factory cased color remaining. The brass butt plate and the barrel band have a golden brass patina. The mechanics are excellent. The bore is for the most part excellent, but there are two rings of light pitting visible about 6" from the muzzle. The stock is in fine condition with some small dings and scratches from use. There is an old, smoothed chip on the left side of the top tang. Arkansawyers! Bring this carbine home! Stock no. 32249
