Item :	SPRINGFIELD U.S. MODEL 1898 KRAG-JORGENSEN RIFLE, .30-40 CAL.

Description :

This is an original, U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle manufactured in 1899 and chambered for the .30-40 Government cartridge. Approximately 330,000 were made between 1898 and 1903. The M1898 Krag had the shortest service life of any U.S. arm, replaced by the M1903 Rifle just 5 years after production began. The Krag was the first U.S. Rifle to fire smokeless ammunition. This rifle is in very good condition. It retains about 30% of its factory blued finish, most of which is on the barrel. The rifle has some overall light rust speckling. The oil quenched receiver has partially faded from a dark gray to a steel and brown patina. There is finish loss and some brown developing on the magazine cover. The bolt handle has some rust spotting. The nose cap and barrel band have a mostly smooth, dark brown patina. There is significant rusting on the butt plate that has left a rough dark brown patina. The rifle works very well mechanically. The bore is fair to good. There was some old pitting that has been cleaned up, and the rifling is now strongly visible along the barrel's length. The stock is in fine condition with a few small dings and scratches from use. There is a visible inspector's cartouche on the left wrist of the stock. It is hard to make out the date, but I believe that it is 1899. Someone also carved a diamond shaped depression on the left side of the butt with the initials "S M" in the center. It looks like it has been there a long time. Also included is an original Mills Patent Tropical Web Sling in very good condition. There is some overall soiling of the web material and a tiny bit of light fraying at the sling swivels. This is a nice old Krag that hasn't been touched in a long time. Stock no. 32203
