Description :

|
This is a .58 Caliber percussion US Model 1861 "Special" Rifle Musket produced by Lamson, Goodnow, & Yale Company of Windsor, Vermont. Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing was the lead design on the M1861 Special Model Rifle Muskets. These Enfield-like pieces were built on Robbins and Lawrence Enfield Machinery and incorporated many of the better features of these British arms. Differences from the standard Model 1861 rifle musket included a wedge shaped, stronger hammer, straight ramrods with stock spoon, and screw bands with no band springs. The clean out screw on the bolster was eliminated. These changes led directly to the improvements incorporated in the M1863 Springfield Rifle Muskets. Along with Colt, these were made by Amoskeag Manufacturing Company and Lamson, Goodnow, & Yale Company. This musket is in very good condition. It has an overall steel gray patina with some mottled brown. There is some light pitting around the bolster. The mechanics are excellent. The bore has some light pitting in places, but the rifling remains strongly visible along the barrel's length. This is one larger pit about 1/3 down the barrel. The stock is very good with a scattering of small dings, dents, and scratches from use. There are two visible inspector's cartouches on the left flat of the stock. The ramrod may be a replica.
