|
Here is an original, Civil War 5th Model Burnside Cavalry Carbine manufactured by the Burnside Rifle Company of Providence, Rhode Island. This carbine was designed by Union General Ambrose E. Burnside prior to the war. The Burnside was the 3rd most used carbine of the Civil War, behind the Sharps and the Spencer. It was a .54 caliber, lever action, single shot, breech loader that used a tapered metallic cartridge. The 5th Model Burnside was the version produced and issued in the largest numbers, with about 43,000 produced from 1863-1865. Cavalry Regiments known to have used the Burnside were the 1st Michigan, the 3rd Indiana, the 5th, 6th, and 7th Ohio, the 1st New Jersey, the 3rd West Virginia, the 3rd, 14th, and 18th Pennsylvania, and the 2nd, 12th, 14th, and 16th Illinois. This carbine is in very good condition with about 90% of the blued finish remaining on the barrel. The receiver, lever mechanism, and butt have a steel patina with a liberal speckling of brown. The mechanics are excellent. The bore is very fine to excellent, bright and shiny, with strong rifling. The stock is in good condition with a scattering of small dings, scratches, and gouges from use. There are two strong inspector's cartouches on the left side of the wrist. Small initials, "J S W" are carved on the belly of the butt stock. This is a good example of a Civil war Burnside. Stock no. 31500
