Description :

|
This is a No.I, Mk.III Short Magazine Lee Enfield Rifle manufactured at Rifle Factory Ishapore in India for the United Kingdom in 1940. It is chambered for the British .303 cartridge. This rifle has been arsenal modified for service as a grenade launching platform. This entailed wrapping the stock in two places with wire to reinforce the wood against the recoil of launching a grenade. The launcher is a cup type that mounts on the muzzle. This allowed a Mills Bomb hand grenade with a special round base plate to be fired longer distances than it could be thrown. This rifle is in very good condition with 60-70% of its black, paint-like finish remaining. There is overall finish wear from use. The rifle has excellent mechanics with a matching bolt. There is a fair amount of old grease in the action. The bore is very fine with strong rifling along the barrel's length. The stock is dark and oily with a liberal scattering of dings and scratches from use. The wire wrap remains tight. This is a good example of the grenade launching Mk.III rifle. Stock no. 32160
