Item :	CONTEMPORARY PENNSYLVANIA FLINTLOCK JAEGER RIFLE, .54 CALIBER

This is a beautiful contemporary hand-built replica of a Pennsylvania Flintlock Jaeger Rifle of .54 caliber. Rifles of this type date to the mid 18th century. They were originally brought to the Pennsylvania area by Germanic settlers and gunmakers. It is this design that would evolve into the classic American Long Rifle (Kentucky Rifle). This is a beautiful example, obviously made by a skilled modern maker. Unfortunately, it is not marked, so there is no way to identify the maker, unless someone recognizes the work. The rifle has an early style flintlock with a curved lock plate. The barrel is full octagon and 31-inches long with a browned finish. It is swamped (tapered and flared) to reduce weight. It tapers from 1 1/8" at the breech to 7/8" at a point about 7" from the muzzle. It then flares to 1" at the muzzle. This Jaeger is in very fine condition. The barrel retains all of its browned finish. There are some small scars where a too-wide flint struck the barrel above the lined touchhole. The lock appears to be case colored with a small rust speck or two near the pan. The brass furniture has developed a nice dark brass patina. The lock works perfectly and sparks well. The bore is in very fine condition. The stock is made from highly figured curly maple. It is decorated with early incise carving and a simple raised relief scroll. While most Jaegers had wooden patchboxes, this one has a very early style brass patchbox. I think this would date more to the Revolutionary War era than earlier. The stock is in very fine condition with just a tiny ding or two from use. There is a cross stippled on the upper tang of the butt plate. This is a superb contemporary Jaeger in great condition.
