Item No.: 10677 Price : $2,895.00
Item : 18TH CENTURY SPANISH, MIQUELET LOCK, FOLDING CAVALRY CARBINE (ESCOPETA), .75 CALIBER
Description :
This is an original, Spanish Flintlock Cavalry Carbine with a unique, folding stock. Dating to the late 18th Century, it has a Spanish "Miquelet" style flint lock and a short 20" smooth bore "Escopeta" barrel. The stock is cut at the wrist with a hinged joint that allows the stock to fold forward. An iron belt hook on the left side of the gun allows it to be carried on a belt or sash. The Escopeta was used by the Spanish in the Americas during the 18th century. This carbine is in very good condition. The barrel and lock have a brown/steel patina. There is some pitting on the barrel, heaviest around the lock and pan. The brass decoration has a golden brass or dark bronze patina, varying from piece to piece. The lock does not move, and I did not want to force it. The bore is dark and dusty. It does look mostly smooth. The latching device for the stock no longer works. The hinge is a bit wobbly after 250 years. It appears that there may have been a thin butt plate, but it is no longer present. The carving of the butt is strongly reminiscent of stocks made by Manuel Cantero of Madrid. There are two gold makers cartouches on the barrel that can probably be researched to find the maker. This is a rare, interesting, and highly unusual early Spanish arm. Stock no. 32047
