Item :	CIVIL WAR SPENCER CARBINE, POST-WAR ALTERATION, .50 CAL.

Description :

This is an original, Civil War Spencer Cavalry Carbine. It is one of the guns that were altered by Springfield Armory after the Civil War to .50 Rimfire. The barrels were sleeved to the smaller .50 caliber and had three-groove rifling. They actions were fitted with the "Stabler Cut Off". This was a small lever that could be toggled to block the movement of the lever, effectively making the Spencer a single shot weapon. This was done to conserve the ammunition in the magazine until a higher rate of fire was actually needed. They were generally arsenal refinished and restocked. This carbine is in good condition. It retains about 70% of its arsenal refinished bluing. There is some finish wear on the receiver. In some areas, the blued finish is beginning to turn brown. The mechanics work, but the hammer spur has been broken off. This is an old break, and someone touched it up with a file. It does make it extremely hard to cock the gun. The bore is fair to good. There is some pitting in places. The rifling is strongly visible along the bore's length. The stock is in good condition with a moderate scattering of small dings and scratches from use. There are some dots on both sides from a pounce wheel. There are initials scratched on the right side of the butt with an 1864 date, but I question their authenticity. An inspector's cartouche is visible just behind the sling bar on the left side of the wrist. This is a well-used veteran of the Indian Wars. Stock no. 31508
